Sculptures

Sculptures "Joy of Motherhood" and "Parting"

On Merikatu Street, a little before the corner from Laivurinkatu, is Villa Ensi. This Art Nouveau building was built in 1912 by request of the industrialist Uno Staudinger as a maternity hospital for midwives, who helped bring to birth his only daughter, Ency, after whom the villa was named. The project was authored by one of the most prominent Finnish architects at the time, Selim A. Lindquist (1867-1939), who also designed Villa Johann for Staudinger.

At the entrance to the building you can see two sculptures: “Joy of motherhood” (Äitiyden ilo) and “Parting” (Jäähväiset). Uno Staudinger purchased these sculptures, as they say, in Norway, although their author is not Norwegian, but Swedish sculptor Harald Sörensen-Ringi (1872-1912). The works symbolize the idyllic aspects of family education.
